Arzan Nagwaswalla is an Indian professional cricketer who has played for his home state of Gujarat (2018–Present) across all 3 formats, as a front-line pace bowler, in the Indian domestic circuit. Before breaking into the senior team, he had represented the state at the under-16, under-19, and under-22 tiers. In the 2019-20 season of the Ranji Trophy (India’s premier domestic first-class cricket competition), his breakthrough domestic season, he had scalped 41 wickets in just 8 matches at an astounding average of 18.36, helping Gujarat reach the semi-final stage of the tournament. Impressed by his consistent performances on the domestic circuit, the Mumbai Indians franchise had selected him as a net bowler for the 2021 IPL (Indian Premier League) season. He then hit the headlines in May 2021 when he was named as one of the four standby players in India’s squad that was picked for the final of the inaugural edition (2019-2021) of the World Test Championship which was to be played in June 2021 at the Rose Bowl in Southampton, England. The enlarged squad (20 players instead of the usual 16 or 17) had to be supplemented by 4 additional standby players due to the complications in international travel and logistics caused by the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

Arzan Nagwaswalla Facts

Bon to Parsi parents in Surat, Gujarat, Arzan grew up in a village named Nargol in Umbergoan town in Gujarat, very close to the state’s border with Maharashtra. In his early days learning the sport of cricket, he was coached by his older brother Vispi. He later got an opportunity to play with some Ranji Trophy-level cricketers in his hometown and that was what had helped him develop his skills considerably.

When he made his first-class debut for Gujarat during the 2018–19 season of the Ranji Trophy, he had become the first player to play a Ranji Trophy match since Zubin Bharucha in 1992.

He was the leading wicket-taker in the 2020–21 season of the Vijay Hazare Trophy (India’s premier domestic one-day cricket competition). He had recorded 19 dismissals in just 7 games at a stellar average of 19.34 runs per wicket.

Before his selection, as a standby player, in India’s squad for the final of the inaugural edition of the World Test Championship, Farokh Engineer (June 1975) was the last male Parsi cricketer to have represented India in an international match. The last Parsi cricketer, male or female, to have represented India in an international match was Diana Edulji (July 1993).

After the 2021 season of the IPL season was cut short midway due to the alarming rise in Covid-19 cases in India, he had received a call from Jay Shah, the secretary of the BCCI, that he was likely to be selected for India’s squad for the final of the World Test Championship.
